Andrew Johannson's Mission

Andrew Johansson is an Irishman on a mission to get seeing eye dogs for the blind by collecting used postage stamps. In the past 12 years he has purchased dozens of guide dogs and enlisted the help of many famous people including the Queen of England, the Prince and Princess of Wales, and Ronald Reagan.

'Drew' was a British navy diver. He was a member of the team that taught Prince Charles how to deep sea dive. In 1975, Drew was chosen to lead the team on a mission during which Drew dived to 400 meters: a record depth at that time. He was under water for over 20 minutes. When he surfaced from his long deep dive he felt fine, but air bubbles had entered his bloodstream. Had he known, and had a long rest, he would still be an active man today.

When he was driving home afterwards, he suddenly lost control of his muscles and crashed his car. It was a miracle Andrew survived. After major surgery he fell into a coma for six months. Once so athletic the crash left Andrew brain-damaged, half-blind and confined to a wheelchair.

In 1983 after meeting a little blind boy Drew came up with the idea of collecting used stamps to help blind people.

It takes 600 kg of used postage stamps to buy one guide dog. Everyday Drew works long hours to accomplish is goal. Drew's motto is "If I can help somebody them my living will not be in vain."
